Frustration, AI, and the Copyright Conundrum: My YouTube Journey

Like many creators, I ventured into YouTube with enthusiasm, excited to share my content and connect with an audience. My videos weren’t your typical vlog or music performances—they were scripted by ChatGPT, an AI known for generating thoughtful text, and brought to life visually through InVideo, another AI platform that crafts compelling, dynamic videos. I thought I had discovered the perfect formula: innovative technology and creative storytelling, all with the convenience of AI. What could go wrong?

As it turns out, quite a lot.

The Excitement of Creation, the Frustration of Copyright

At first, I was eager to see my ideas turn into videos. Whether it was an explainer video, a product review, or something more creative, I felt empowered by the potential to streamline the content creation process using AI tools. Once I uploaded my first few videos to YouTube, I eagerly waited for views and engagement. But soon enough, an email notification popped up: “Copyright claim on your video.”

Confused, I shrugged it off. Surely this was just a mistake, right? After all, I had written the scripts myself, albeit with the help of AI, and the video footage was generated through InVideo's AI platform, utilizing stock footage and templates.

However, the same thing kept happening—time after time. Despite my best efforts to ensure that everything was legally sound, YouTube’s relentless Content ID system flagged my videos for potential copyright violations. It didn’t take long for my excitement to turn into frustration.

YouTube’s Content ID: Friend or Foe?

Here’s a fun fact that feels less fun when you’re on the receiving end of it: YouTube’s Content ID system is one of the most comprehensive copyright management systems in existence. It automatically scans every video uploaded to the platform and compares it against a database of copyrighted material. On paper, this sounds like a great way to protect creators from having their work stolen. In practice, however, the system can be overly strict, casting a wide net that flags innocent content, including mine.

My videos didn’t use anyone else’s music, video clips, or visual assets knowingly. In fact, I was diligent about selecting what I believed were royalty-free assets from InVideo’s library. Yet, every time I pressed “Upload,” I couldn’t escape the dreaded copyright claim.

The Moment of Realization: A Turning Point

At first, I was just plain confused. How could this be happening? I was following all the rules—or so I thought. As the claims piled up, I began to feel more than just confused. I felt angry. I was investing time and effort into content creation, trying to engage with an audience, and every time I seemed to make headway, YouTube’s system knocked me back down.

This was when I realized something crucial: I didn't fully understand the complexities of copyright law or the rules surrounding "fair use." Like many creators, I assumed that using royalty-free content or AI-generated materials would protect me from copyright issues. But copyright isn’t that straightforward, and neither are the tools we use to avoid it.

I dove into research, learning more about how copyright laws work and how fair use can sometimes be a grey area. Did you know that copyright infringement isn’t always about copying content verbatim? Even if you use someone else’s work in small amounts, or in an altered form, it can still get flagged, especially if the use isn’t "transformative" enough. I discovered that even AI-generated content, like the videos I was creating, could still face copyright issues depending on the sources the AI relied on to pull together its visuals and audio.

Copyright Laws: Lessons Learned

One of the most important lessons I learned was that creativity comes with responsibility. I needed to be more proactive in understanding copyright laws and how they applied to the content I was producing—even if AI played a role in its creation. For example, many royalty-free platforms allow creators to use their materials, but only if specific rules are followed. Using a clip or a song under Creative Commons licensing might require attribution, or restrict you from monetizing your video without the proper rights.

Here’s a tip I wish I knew from the beginning: When creating content, you need to go beyond just using "free" tools. You need to make sure you’re using those tools in a legally compliant way. In fact, understanding terms like "royalty-free" and "Creative Commons" can save a lot of headache down the road. Fair use also varies depending on where you live, making international platforms like YouTube even trickier to navigate.

Shifting My Mindset: From Frustration to Empowerment

What started as a frustrating obstacle became a turning point for me. Instead of giving up, I decided to take control of the situation. I started using YouTube’s Audio Library to ensure that all my music was free and clear for use. I researched royalty-free footage platforms with ironclad terms of service, and I began to experiment with more original visuals—whether that meant creating my own graphics or combining different media in a more transformative way.

I also started paying closer attention to fair use principles—particularly when using AI-generated content. The line between human and AI creativity can be blurry, and while AI tools like ChatGPT and InVideo are powerful, I learned that relying on them doesn’t absolve me from the responsibility of copyright compliance.

The Takeaway: Creativity Requires Knowledge

My journey with copyright on YouTube taught me an invaluable lesson: creativity and compliance go hand in hand. You can’t just create content in a vacuum; you have to understand the legal landscape, especially when AI tools are involved. While AI offers unprecedented opportunities for creators, it’s not a shortcut to bypass copyright regulations.

This experience shifted my mindset from frustration to empowerment. Instead of viewing YouTube’s copyright system as an enemy, I now see it as a challenge to be overcome with knowledge. I’ve learned to be more thoughtful about how I create, more careful about the content I use, and more aware of the laws that protect creators. Ultimately, this process has made me not only a better creator but a more informed one.

So, if you’re struggling with copyright claims on YouTube, don’t lose hope. Take the time to understand the laws, educate yourself on fair use, and explore creative ways to avoid infringing on others’ work. In the end, your creativity will thrive—and so will your respect for the rules that shape our digital world.
